The rising of Matariki marks the Māori New Year, a sacred time to remember, reflect and renew. It is a season to honour those who has passed, celebrate the present with whanau and community, and look ahead with hope for the year to come.

At the heart of Matariki is Pohutukawa. The star that carries our loved ones who have passed into the heavens. Pohutukawa reminds us to pause and remember those no longer with us, holding their memory close and acknowledging the enduring connections we share. Through this remembrance, we honour their lives and the legacy they leave behind.

As part of our Matariki celebrations at the Library on Tuesday 7 July 2026, we will recognise those who have passed away since last Matariki by displaying their names and a message on a memorial tribute video.

If you would like to include the name of a loved one, along with a message of remembrance, please complete the form below.

Please note: While we will make every effort to include all submissions, inclusion cannot be guaranteed. Gisborne District Council is not responsible for the accuracy of the information provided and cannot confirm display timings. Messages must be respectful and appropriate.
