CALL FOR ART

Here at the HB Williams Memorial Library, we are getting really excited about Matariki 2023 and all the fun activities that will be going on in our community to celebrate and reflect.

We are busy planning some awesome events and we need your help.

Curation has begun for Toi Matariki | Exhibition 2023 - a collection of creative reflections from our community.

This year’s theme is Kua haehae ngā hihi o Matariki | The rays of Matariki are spread, people say this whakatauki when Matariki can be seen bright in the night sky.  The rays of its stars are thought to carry messages for the people.  Matariki is a time to share stories, reflect on the past and plan for the future.

Please think creatively, any artistic medium goes, within reason ;)

Ideas for creations:

  • Art works on Paper or Card
  • Photography (Digital or Print)
  • A Poem or Song
  • Something theatrical or a TV episode perhaps
  • Music
  • A Story
  • An Installation
  • Dance

Space is limited, so we would love to hear what you are planning to allow us to allocate the appropriate space for your creations! (See proposal link below)

The exhibition will open on Monday July 3rd in conjunction with Matariki opening events and will continue through the period of Matariki Celebrations and the month of July to give whānau and friends a good opportunity to see the wondrous Matariki inspired creations. (Monday July 03 – Monday 31 July 2023)

Submissions are welcome from all residents of Tairāwhiti

You may participate as:

  • An individual
  • A whānau, family or friend group
  • Class or Syndicate
  • School/Kura
  • Workplace
  • Community Group
  • Other 

Performance pieces:

  • Either recorded and sent in so we can put on the electronic display in Papatipu, the Young Adults area
  • Or at a time organized with library staff to present to the public

 Please submit your proposal by Friday the 16th of June, although the sooner the better. Once your proposal has been approved by our team, we will need to receive your Mahi by no later than Friday the 23rd of June.

Please note: HB Williams Memorial Library will endeavor to take all due care and precautions relating to the safety of your art works. However, the library can only receive and exhibit artwork on condition that neither the library nor the staff shall be liable for any loss or damage of the artwork while on display at the library.

CALLING YOUNG POETS

Here at the HB Williams Memorial Library, we are getting really excited about Matariki 2023 and all the fun activities that will be going on in our community to celebrate and reflect.

We are busy planning some awesome events and we need your help.

We are running a creative poets competition for rangatahi up to the age of 18 years.   Matariki is a time to share stories, reflect on the past and plan for the future and we want you to share your creative poems with us as we celebrate Matariki.

Be as creative as you like you pick the Kaupapa anything goes, within reason.

Submissions are open now and close Tuesday July 11. 

We have three prezzy card prizes up for grabs. ($100, $50, $25)

Winners will be announced on Thursday July 13

Poems will go on display in the library during the month of July with participants permission to give whānau and friends a good opportunity to see the wondrous Matariki inspired creations. (Monday July 03 – Monday 31 July 2023)

CALLING RANGATAHI 

Matariki is a time to share stories, reflect on the past and plan for the future.

This year we will be hosting a Rangatahi Open Mic Night for rangatahi to share, perform and showcase their talents as we celebrate Matariki.  If you have something you would like to share maybe a song, poem or even a dance then get in contact with us now. 

We have nine ten-minute slots for rangatahi to share.  Registration is open to rangatahi aged 11-18 years.
