Te Ohonga o Matariki ~ Matariki week opening

July 2nd, Friday  - 10AM

Celebrate the rise of Matariki as we start our week-long programme with a karakia and a kapa haka performance from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori ō Māngātuna. Nau mai, haere mai, rarau mai.

Nikau Hindin - Artist Talk

July 3rd, Saturday  - 10:30AM

Tairāwhiti based Contemporary Artist Nikau Hindin talks about the Star Maps that form the basis of her art works, with a focus on Matariki. All welcome.


July 5th, Monday  - 1:15PM

Watch ‘Te Iwa o Matariki’ inside an inflatable planetarium and learn how to find the stars of Matariki. Brought to you by the team from the Tairāwhiti Museum, suitable for all ages.

Ron Taiapa - Mahinga Kai, Maramataka Māori

July 6th, Tuesday  - 6PM

Ron, a horticulture teacher at EIT talks about the use of the Maramataka (the māori calendar) as a generic planning tool, and his vision to normalise it for all to use. All welcome.

Waiata - Ngā Manu Tīoriori

Join the library team and Gisborne District Council’s Ngā Manu Tīoriori for a session of waiata. First Tuesday of the month, free, friendly and open to the public. Nau mai, haere mai, waiata mai.

Learn how to make your own tītī tōrea and practice some basic tītī tōrea movements. Easy and fun activity for the whole family.
